Ethiopian, Sebeta to Djibouti Railways Inauguration
The inauguration of the 650km Sebeta-Mieso-Dewele railway line has been scheduled for inauguration for September 12, 2016. Senior government officials led by Workneh Gebeyehu (PhD) visited the project this week. Installation of electric line, which supplies power to the locomotives, has been finalized on the 100 km Sebeta-Adama segment of the project. Trial operations will commence soon. Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Ethiopian Railways Corporation (ERC), Getachew Betru (Dr. Eng.), said the trial operation will commence after a handing over ceremony of the installed electric line within a few days. The Corporation has already taken delivery of all the 41 locomotives which will be used on the railway line. Upon going fully operational, the railway line helps carry up to 3,500 tons of goods from the Port of Djibouti to Ethiopia and transport up to 2,400 people in a single trip.
