There are three basic processes for cleaning black seeds. Cleaning is conducted by mixing traditional and modern mechanics. If done correctly, your seeds can contain less than 0.01 percent of contaminants.

Traditional Cleaning Method

In Ethiopia, black seeds are cultivated in the Bale and Gonder areas. These cities are roughly 500 kilometers from Addis Abeba, the capital. Farmers collect the black seed pods before sieving the seeds. Sticks are then used to beat these pods. This will fracture the dry pods and allow the seeds to fall out. This procedure is carried out at the farm’s location.

The seeds are then collected and cleaned with screens. This procedure will remove the shattered pods but will not remove the stems and leaves completely. There’ll be some defective seeds that will not be removed as well. 

This cleaning procedure can be improved by using your hands. picking impurities one by one.  Cleaning with your hands will require a significant amount of work and time. Farmers do not typically employ this strategy. Instead, the seeds are sold whole. The impurities are then hand-picked by end buyers from the local markets.

The agricultural area is a little more than one hectare. Having a tiny farm makes it impossible to obtain seeds. Cleaning black seeds by hand does not make them viable for oil production. The industry standard for producing oil is more than 99.5%. To achieve these pure seeds, they must be cleaned by machines. Wholesalers or bulk distributors will handle this.

Using Destoner Machines

A destoner is a machine that is designed to remove stones, mud, or impurities of similar size or shape from black seeds. That is how current black seed plants remove or separate both large and tiny stones from black seeds, resulting in commercial black seeds that are stone-free.

The difference in grain-specific gravity, particle size, shape, and the surface condition is what drives the destoner machine. The working surface of the black seed destoner is covered with a woven wire mesh bed, through which air flows from below when it is in use. Stone and other heavy contaminants are not lifted by the air cushion and remain on the mesh bed. The heavier impurities (stones or sand) are conveyed to the beginning of the regulating plate at the far end of the machine by the vibratory action of the table. Destoner machines are classified into numerous categories, including connecting rod-type destoners, vibratory destoner, double-deck destoner, small rice destoner, and so on.

Through the use of a destoner, sand or stones are removed from black seeds.

Gravity Separation of Black Seeds

Particles are often separated by weight and density using a gravity separation table, sometimes known as an “air table.” As long as it flows over the table on a “fluidized” bed of air, any dry substance may be employed as a separation table. Heavy particles are separated from lighter particles by the separator’s eccentric motion and adjustable upward tilt. Light and heavy pollutants might be eliminated from your product as a consequence.

Gravity separators are frequently used to separate the light, inferior seed, whereas destoners are frequently used to remove the heavy foreign material. The four standard fundamental modifications are air, speed, side slope, and end slope. The impacts of Air and Speed on the deck pattern are often antagonistic.

Black Seed Sortex Cleaning

Sortex is an optical sorter that has the ability to separate black seeds. It can identify foreign elements and faults in light or dark colors. When the camera notices any color flaws, it tells the machine’s built-in ejectors to open the nozzle. The nozzle is associated with compressed air valves. After that, the color-defective material from the input black seeds is ejected using this air.

This method is essential to guaranteeing that black seeds are 99.9 percent pure. This will be the final stage of cleaning. The seeds will then go to packaging after this phase.
